Business credit cards without switching bank: the UK cards that work with your existing account

By Chris

Most high-street business credit cards are sold only to the bank’s own current-account customers. If you are happy where you bank, or simply do not want the upheaval of moving, that rules out most of the market. These are the cards that work alongside the account you already have, grouped from the issuers’ own eligibility wording, checked on 15 September 2026 and, for the newer entries, 28 October 2026.

The short answer

  • A limited company or LLP that wants to keep its bank: Capital on Tap. It is not a bank and has no current account of its own, so the account you apply with and repay from is the one you already have. It adds £0 annual fee, 0% non-sterling transaction fee and 1 point per £1 with no threshold.
  • A limited company that wants a published representative APR: iwoca, which also works without moving your banking and publishes 35.40% APR representative (variable); rates from 14.99%. Capital on Tap does not publish a representative APR.
  • A company that has traded for a year: Funding Circle states it plainly: “No need to switch your business banking”.
  • A director who wants Amex points: American Express Business Gold or Platinum, with any UK business bank account.
  • A business that is happy with its bank and values one relationship: your bank’s own card may be the better choice, and we say why below.
  • A sole trader: Capital on Tap, Funding Circle, iwoca and the Amex Gold and Platinum cards are companies-only. The British Airways Amex Accelerating Business card accepts sole traders with any UK business bank account, at £250 a year; otherwise check your own bank’s card, and ask Barclaycard about Select Cashback.

I use Capital on Tap myself, on the free tier, for a few years in a small UK agency. The other cards on this page are research from issuers’ pages; I have not held them.

Which cards need which bank account

Of the 17 business credit and charge cards we track besides Capital on Tap, 9 say you must already hold the issuer’s business current account; 5 work with an account elsewhere; and for 3, the pages we read do not say either way. Tide appears nowhere here: the credit card Tide offers is Capital on Tap’s, brokered by Tide, as Capital on Tap vs Tide explains.

“Our data does not show an account requirement” is not the same as “no account needed”. It means the product page and terms we read did not state one. Ask the issuer before you apply. The full field, with APRs and eligibility, is on compare UK business credit cards.

Why banks tie business credit cards to their current accounts

A bank that runs your current account sees every payment in and out: how much you turn over, how steady it is, how close to zero the balance gets at the end of the month. That is the best information any lender can have about a small business, and it is information the bank already holds. Lending only to its own customers lets it make decisions on real cash flow rather than on an application form, and it keeps the customer inside the bank.

The requirement is often firm. The Co-operative Bank Business Credit Card’s page says: “Co-operative Bank business account holder required (closing it closes the card)”. NatWest specifies an account “in the same legal entity”, so a director’s personal account does not count.

Standalone lenders get the same kind of information another way: by asking you to connect your bank account. Capital on Tap says Open Banking data is used to assess limit increases, which is how a non-bank sees your cash flow without being your bank.

What Capital on Tap says about your bank account

Precision matters here, because Capital on Tap does not use the phrase “no need to switch bank”. What its pages say is:

  • On the card page: “Do I need a business current account to apply? Yes, you must have a business bank account to apply for the Capital on Tap Business Credit Card.”
  • In the FAQ: you can connect more than one business bank account (“you can connect multiple business bank accounts to your Capital on Tap account.”)
  • In its legal footer: “New Wave Capital Limited (trading as Capital on Tap) is not a bank.”

Put together, the conclusion is straightforward. Capital on Tap offers no business current account, so it cannot require you to hold one with it. You need a business bank account to apply, and it is the one you already have, with whichever bank you chose. The application asks for your average monthly turnover and business bank details, and you can link more than one account if your money is split across banks. Nothing about your banking changes.

The other conditions still apply: it takes a Ltd, LLP or PLC, it is not available to sole traders, and there is no minimum trading history. The eligibility page has the full list. If the fact that it is not a bank gives you pause, is Capital on Tap legit? covers its regulation: it holds FCA firm reference 625592 (consumer credit).

Funding Circle, iwoca and American Express

Funding Circle. The only issuer in our data that makes the point in its own marketing: “No need to switch your business banking”. Its eligibility is Limited companies only; at least one year trading; £30,000+ turnover, which rules out new companies; rewards are 2% cashback for 6 months (capped at £2,000), then 1% uncapped; the non-sterling fee is 0%. Research from Funding Circle’s page, checked on 28 October 2026.

iwoca. The newest entrant, and the closest like-for-like rival to Capital on Tap: £0 annual fee, 1% cashback on all spending, credited to the balance, 0% (Visa exchange rate) on non-sterling spend, and 35.40% APR representative (variable); rates from 14.99%. Our data shows no requirement to bank with anyone in particular. Eligibility as we read it: UK limited company (the FAQ also says partnership), registered at Companies House (Page body says director of a limited company; FAQ says limited company or partnership.). Research from iwoca’s page, checked on 28 October 2026.

American Express. The Business Gold application asks for: Current UK business bank account; aged 18+; permanent UK home address; £20,000+ personal income; director or member of a Ltd or LLP. Any bank will do. These are charge cards, paid in full each month, with 2.99% on non-sterling spend, and acceptance is narrower than Visa. The Gold and Platinum cards are compared on Amex Business Gold vs Platinum.

Where our data is silent: Barclaycard and Zempler

Barclaycard Select Cashback, Barclaycard Premium Plus, Zempler Bank Business Credit Card: our data does not show an account requirement for these, so check with the issuer. The Select Cashback application asks for business details, a bank statement, turnover and net profit before tax; not declined for a Barclaycard commercial card in the last six months, which implies a bank account somewhere but not necessarily at Barclays. Zempler Bank offers its own business accounts, and its card page, as we read it, does not say whether you need one. All of them accept sole traders, which makes them worth a phone call if you are not a limited company.

When your own bank’s card is the better choice

Not switching bank cuts both ways. If you already hold a business current account with NatWest, Lloyds, HSBC, Santander or another bank on the list above, its card may well be the easiest to get. The bank already has months or years of your account history, so the application can be simpler and there is one relationship, one app and one login. A bank that knows your cash flow may be willing to offer a bigger limit than a standalone lender that has only an application form to go on. That is a possibility rather than a rule, but it is a real reason to ask your bank first, particularly if a large limit on day one matters more to you than rewards.

The trade-offs are usually on price: most bank cards charge a non-sterling fee of around 3%, cashback where it exists often comes with a threshold or a cap, and several charge an annual fee per card. The head-to-head is on Capital on Tap vs high-street banks. Some businesses hold both: the bank card for the relationship, a standalone card for foreign-currency spend and staff cards.

What switching bank actually costs

If the card you want requires a new current account, the card is the easy part. The work is in moving everything else:

  • A new sort code and account number, which every customer paying you by bank transfer has to update.
  • Payment details on invoices, templates, your website and email signatures, plus the risk that a customer keeps paying the old account for months.
  • Direct debits and standing orders for software, insurance, rent and HMRC, each of which has to move. A switching service can carry many of them across, but not always every one.
  • Your accountant’s bank feed, which needs reconnecting in the accounting software, along with any bank rules they have set up.
  • Payment providers and payroll: card terminals, online checkouts and payroll software all pay into or out of the account and need updating.

None of this is impossible, and for a business that wants to move anyway it is a one-off. But taking all of it on just to get a credit card is poor value when cards exist that work with the account you have. Whichever card you choose, connect it to your accounting software directly; our guide to syncing cards with Xero, QuickBooks and FreeAgent explains how. Capital on Tap syncs to Sage, Xero, QuickBooks, FreeAgent and more, syncs every 12 hours.

How repayments work from an account at another bank

Repaying a card from a different bank is routine. Capital on Tap offers Smart Repay: automatic Direct Debit or Open Banking repayments, including daily; you choose between minimum, fixed amount or full balance, and manual debit-card repayments up to £5,000 are also possible. The minimum payment is the greater of 10% of the balance or £100. Funding Circle collects its minimum payment of 10% of the balance or £100, whichever is higher, by Direct Debit.

The setting that matters most is full balance. Capital on Tap charges no interest on purchases if you pay the statement balance in full by the due date. It advertises rates as low as 13.86% APR (variable) and does not publish a representative APR, so if you set the Direct Debit to the minimum you will pay interest at a rate you only see after applying. Set it to full balance and the card costs nothing to run. Our guide to avoiding business credit card interest goes through the settings.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a business credit card without switching bank?

Yes, if your business is a limited company. Capital on Tap is not a bank and has no current account of its own; you need a business bank account, with any bank, to apply, and you can connect more than one business bank account. Funding Circle says “No need to switch your business banking”. iwoca and the American Express business cards also work with an account elsewhere. Most high-street bank cards require that bank’s current account.

Which business credit cards require you to bank with the issuer?

In our data: NatWest Business Credit Card, NatWest Business Plus Credit Card, Lloyds Bank Business Credit Card, HSBC Commercial Card, Santander Business Cashback Credit Card, Metro Bank Business Credit Card, Virgin Money Business Credit Card, The Co-operative Bank Business Credit Card, Bank of Scotland Business Credit Card. Each states that you need the bank’s own business current account, and some close the card if you close the account.

Does Capital on Tap say you don’t need to switch bank?

Not in those words. What it says is that you need a business bank account, with any bank, to apply, and that you can connect more than one business bank account. Its legal footer states that it is not a bank. Since it offers no business current account, the account you repay from is one you already hold elsewhere.

How do I repay a business credit card from a different bank?

By Direct Debit or Open Banking from your existing account, or by a manual payment. Capital on Tap offers Smart Repay: automatic Direct Debit or Open Banking repayments, including daily, and you choose minimum, fixed amount or full balance; manual debit-card repayments up to £5,000 are also possible. Funding Circle’s minimum payment is 10% of the balance or £100, whichever is higher, by Direct Debit.

Do Barclaycard business cards need a Barclays account?

Our data does not show an account requirement for Barclaycard Select Cashback or Premium Plus, but it does not rule one out either, so check with Barclaycard. The Select Cashback application asks for business details, a bank statement, turnover and net profit before tax; not declined for a Barclaycard commercial card in the last six months.
