Santander Business Cashback Credit Card review: the fee, the cashback and who can apply
By Chris
Santander’s Business Cashback Credit Card pays uncapped cashback on everything, charges nothing extra on purchases abroad, and accepts sole traders. It also carries an annual fee, requires a Santander business current account, and is built for businesses with no more than two owners. Whether it is a good card depends almost entirely on whether you fit that shape.
Verdict
The Santander Business Cashback Credit Card is a good card for an existing Santander business customer with no more than two owners. It pays 1% cashback, uncapped, paid monthly, charges 0% on purchases in the local currency, gives interest-free credit for up to 56 days on purchases, and publishes a representative APR. The £30 fee is small next to the cashback on any regular spend, and sole traders are welcome, which rules out Capital on Tap for them straight away.
It suits: a sole trader, partnership or small company that already banks with Santander, has no more than two directors or partners, needs only a handful of cards and wants everything in one place.
Skip it if: your business banks elsewhere, has more than two owners or more than a few people who need cards, needs a limit above the card’s ceiling, or simply would rather not pay a fee for the same 1% it can earn for free. For a limited company or LLP in any of those positions, Capital on Tap is the better fit.

Every row comes from Santander’s product page, checked on 28 October 2026. “Not stated” means the page does not say.
The fee and the cashback
The cashback is straightforward: 1% cashback, uncapped, paid monthly. There is no monthly spend threshold of the kind Barclaycard and Lloyds use, no category tiers and no annual cap. Santander says: cashback paid monthly onto the card and shown on the statement. That means it reduces your card balance rather than arriving in a bank account.
The fee needs reading carefully. Santander’s page says the £30 fee is added when you activate the card and is charged even if you do not use it. So a card taken out “just in case” and left in a drawer costs money.
The break-even point is easy to work out. At 1%, the cashback covers the £30 fee once you spend £3,000 in a year (£30 divided by 1%), about £250 a month. Anything above that is profit. Most businesses that use a card for software, fuel or supplies clear it comfortably.
The comparison with a free card is just as simple. On an illustrative £2,000 a month, Santander pays about £240 a year, or £210 after the fee. Capital on Tap at 1% with £0 annual fee pays about £240. One honest caveat: Capital on Tap earns points with each transaction each transaction rounded down to the nearest pound, so a business making lots of small purchases gives back a little of that gap. The cashback cards page runs the numbers for every card we track.
Spending abroad and cash
Santander charges 0% on purchases in the local currency. The fine print matters: converted at the Mastercard exchange rate, and the no-fee promise covers purchases in the local currency. If a shop or website abroad offers to charge you in pounds, say no; paying in the local currency is what keeps the conversion at the Mastercard rate. That puts the card in the small group of UK business cards that are genuinely cheap to use abroad, alongside Capital on Tap at 0% non-sterling transaction fee. The no foreign transaction fee cards page lists the rest.
Cash is expensive, as it is on most credit cards: 3% (min £3); cash interest rate 27.9%. Capital on Tap charges £0 ATM fee, though interest on cash withdrawals from the day you take them. Neither card is a sensible way to borrow cash.
Who can apply
This is where most readers will be ruled in or out. Santander’s eligibility is: Existing Santander business current account; sole trader, partnership, LLP or Ltd with up to two partners or directors. Limits £500 to £25,000. The page adds: no more than two partners or directors who own the business entirely; no IVA in the last six years.
In plain terms: you must already hold a Santander business current account; the business must be owned entirely by its directors or partners, and there can be no more than two of them, so a company with an outside investor or an extra shareholder-director does not qualify; and the IVA rule above applies. In return, Santander accepts every business form, sole traders included, which is more than Capital on Tap does.
Capital on Tap is not available to sole traders and takes a Ltd, LLP or PLC. Its published eligibility has no rule on the number of owners, and it is not a bank, so it has no current account to move you to: you need a business bank account, with any bank, to apply, and you can connect more than one business bank account. For a company that banks with Starling, Tide, Monzo or one of the other high-street banks, that is the practical difference. The cards that don’t need a bank switch page covers the options, and the Capital on Tap vs high-street banks comparison sets Santander beside the other bank cards.
The credit check
Santander says a full credit check is made on application, so expect a hard search that other lenders can see. For most applicants a single search is not a problem, but if you are about to apply for a mortgage or other finance, it is worth timing.
Capital on Tap is more precise about what it does: a soft search on your personal credit file when you apply, which does not affect your personal credit score, and a hard search on the business’s credit file only once you sign the credit agreement. That is a softer start rather than no check at all; both issuers look at your credit before lending.
Cardholders
Santander allows up to 3 additional cardholders (4 cards in total), no extra fee; every director or partner must hold one. For a business with a couple of directors and a bookkeeper, that is enough. For anything with a team, it is not: 4 cards is the ceiling, and the rule that every director or partner must hold one uses up places before any staff are added.
Capital on Tap gives unlimited free employee cards with per-card limits, with limits per billing period or per transaction. In my agency I use its card controls, with limits set from the portal, rather than sharing one card number. If more than a couple of people spend on behalf of the business, this is the strongest reason to look past Santander. The employee cards page compares the options.
Santander’s page does not name an accounting integration. Capital on Tap syncs to Sage, Xero, QuickBooks, FreeAgent and more, and I use its accounting feed for reconciliation.
Limits, interest and the guarantee
Santander’s credit limits run from £500 to £25,000. That is a sensible range for a small business, but the top is modest. Capital on Tap advertises limits up to £250,000; that is a ceiling, not a promise, and my own limit came in lower than I expected and has been hard to increase. Neither issuer says what a typical starting limit is.
Santander gives interest-free credit for up to 56 days on purchases and publishes a representative APR: 23.7% APR representative (variable); purchase rate 18.9%. If you might carry a balance, that published figure lets you compare before you apply. Capital on Tap does not state an interest-free period in days; there is no interest on purchases if you pay the statement balance in full by the due date. It advertises rates as low as 13.86% APR (variable) and does not publish a representative APR; your rate depends on your personal and business credit history and the Bank of England base rate.
On the guarantee, Santander says a personal guarantee is required from all directors or members of a Ltd or LLP. If there are two directors, both are on the hook. Capital on Tap says a personal guarantee required, from a director or major shareholder. Our guide to director personal guarantees explains what you are signing either way.

On the rewards rate and on foreign spend the two cards are level. Santander wins for sole traders, for anyone who wants a published representative APR, and for Santander customers who value keeping their banking and their card under one roof. Capital on Tap wins on cost (no fee for the same 1%), on cardholders (unlimited and free against a maximum of 4), on eligibility for companies that bank elsewhere or have more than two owners, and on its advertised limit ceiling.
